Judiciary to seek remaining $55M for Kona courthouse

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Judiciary says it will be asking the state Legislature for the remaining $55 million needed to build a Kona courthouse.

Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald delivered the State of the Judiciary address Wednesday at a joint session of the state Senate and House.

The Legislature has already committed $35 million to fund construction of the planned Kona Judiciary Complex.

Recktenwald says currently in West Hawaii, court proceedings are being held in three different locations, in buildings that were not designed as courthouses. He says that has led to security, logistical and operational problems.

He says improving infrastructure is important for the growing West Hawaii community.

His speech also covered plans for a new environmental court, which is scheduled to begin by July.
