Sources: UH investigating drug use on men's basketball team road trip

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

For as well as the Rainbow Warrior basketball team has been playing on the court this year, scandals continue to follow the squad.

Sources told Hawaii News Now on Tuesday the school is looking into allegations that several players were smoking marijuana in their hotel room during a trip to Riverside, California.

We're told this all started after the athletics department received an incident report from the team's hotel following a January 17th game against UC-Riverside.

Athletics director Ben Jay says UH is investigating a hotel incident involving more than one player, and that interviews are being conducted.

But sources say a handful of players were lighting up in their room, so much that it caused the smoke alarm to go off.

Benjy Taylor addressed the story this morning.

"Well I have no comment to that," Taylor said. "Anyone in our administration should have no comment to that. It's an issue that we're dealing with and we're handling it internally, but these kids have rights you know, at the end of the day, it's not a public issue. There was no police involved and there's nothing that would warrant anybody from our administration commenting on it at all."

Jay said the investigation is ongoing and would not comment on any course of action, if the players were found to be at fault.

The student-athlete handbook says athletes may be subject to drug tests and suspended if found to be in violation.

The team left Hawaii this afternoon for a two-week, four-game road trip.

Taylor says there are no immediate plans to suspend any players.

"Of course not," Taylor said. "For what? There's nothing to suspend them for. There's nothing to even be talking about really."

Hawaii News Now will continue to provide updates on this story as they become available.
