1 suspect charged in connection with Hilo murder

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police have charged one person and released three others in connection with a fatal stabbing in Hilo on Tuesday. 

At 11 a.m. Saturday (January 24) Detectives charged 22-year-old Garrett Dahlin of Honomu with second-degree murder. His bail is set at $250,000. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday (January 26).

22-year-old Lilly Costa was released from police custody Friday evening pending further investigation. On Saturday morning 28-year-old Brittne Morgan and 21-year-old Aaron Figueroa, both of Honomu, were also released pending further investigation.

43-year-old Brian Whetten, who had no permanent address, was found Tuesday with stab wounds in a drug store parking lot off Kilauea Avenue. He was later pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center.
