Hawaii transgender group wants new birth certificate rules

HONOLULU (AP) - A Hawaii lawmaker wants to change a state law that requires people to have surgery before they can switch the gender listed on their birth certificates.

Rep. Chris Lee says he plans to introduce the bill sought by Equality Hawaii. He says everyone deserves the right to be recognized for who they are.

Under the bill, transgender people who can't have gender reassignment surgery for health or financial reasons could get a birth certificate that reflects their gender identity.

Proponents say transgender people have a hard time getting jobs and don't want to present what they call an outdated birth certificate and be "outed."

Opponents say people were born either male or female. They say allowing people to more easily change birth certificates could cause problems.
