Rainbow Warriors pick apart UC-Davis for Big West upset
UH is 14-6 this season
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Aaron Valdes had 21 points, Isaac Fleming posted a career-high six steals and the University of Hawai‘i men's basketball team handed UC Davis its first Big West Conference loss with a 84-76 win on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The ‘Bows (14-6, 2-2 BWC) were relentless on the defensive end, repeatedly forcing backcourt turnovers to the tune of 18 steals, just two short of the program record they equaled this season.
Garrett Nevels added nine points on 4-5 shooting in his first action since having thumb surgery more than two weeks ago. Mike Thomas added 13 points and shot a perfect 6-6 from the line.
The eight-point margin of victory did not do the big win justice, as UH led by 24 points with eight minutes to play. The Aggies made a late 12-2 run and some late-game hi-jinks cut into the lead, but the mountain proved to be too much to climb.
Corey Hawkins led the Aggies (14-4, 4-1 BWC) with 19 points.
UH faces another Big West test this Saturday when it hosts UC Irvine at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
