HONOLULU (AP) - A unique type of affordable housing has received a development permit, paving the way for a Honolulu rental project that will provide artists with living and working spaces.

The agency that owns the project site and regulates Kakaako development voted Wednesday to issue the permit.

Monthly rents are projected to range from $437 to $1,334 and will be affordable to artist households earning 30 percent to 60 percent of Honolulu's median income.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports there have been significant challenges tied to obtaining government financing for most of the project's $38 million cost. Some observers questioned whether the project would move forward.

Hawaii Symphony Orchestra violinist Fumiko Wellington was among the artists who attended Wednesday's hearing. She says the project shows that the state supports local artists.
