Man dies after being swept off rocks at China Walls

PORTLOCK, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 28-year-old man has died after he was swept off the rocks at China Walls in East Honolulu.

Rescue crews responded to an alarm for a swimmer in distress at 5:48 p.m. Sunday at the popular but dangerous swimming spot.

Bystanders said the man was knocked off the rocks by a wave and couldn't swim back to shore.

Rescue crews arrived as a beach goer tried to swim the victim back to shore. The good Samaritan said he found the man at the bottom of the ocean.

Rescue personnel took over and brought him back to land. He was then transported in critical condition to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Honolulu Police said the case is being classified as an unattended death.
