HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Students gathered at the State Capitol to be sworn in for the YMCA Youth and Government opening ceremony.

The 64th annual Youth Legislature event took place in the Senate Chambers.

Kai Uyehara capped off the festivities as he took the Youth Governor Elect oath of office.

The YMCA Youth and Government program was created in 1936 as way to teach future generations the inner workings of governmental process and democracy.

In addition to being sworn in, the students will be holding a mock three-day legislative session; they will be tackling issues such as homelessness and invasive species.
