POHOIKI, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Flames broke out near Pohoiki Park in the afternoon; beach-goers had to evacuate due to the smoky and dangerous conditions.

The blaze was so severe Route 137 was closed for several hours.

No injuries have been reported. The Puna lava flow is the possible cause of the fire but has not yet been confirmed.

Residents say flames started and spread quickly.

"I was surfing and I looked on shore and it started kinda as a minor brush fire and then within about 10 minutes it just exploded, the plume was pretty big." said Steve Hurakami, a local surfer.
