54-year-old man dies after early morning collision in Wahiawa

WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 54-year-old Mililani man is dead after a collision in Wahiawa early Saturday morning.

Police say the accident happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Wilikina Drive near McCornack Road. The man was traveling northbound on Wilikina Drive when he lost control of his vehicle and struck four parked vehicles, according to HPD.

One of the parked vehicles had two occupants, a 26-year-old Waianae woman, and a 21-year-old Wahiawa man. The 54-year-old man's vehicle overturned as a result of the collision, and he was ejected from the vehicle.

The Mililani man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. The woman was taken to the hospital in good condition, and the Wahiawa man was not injured.

HPD said speed appeared be a contributing factor.\

"It's very noisy, and the speed limit is 35," said nearby resident Mary Reavis, who did not hear the crash. "I don't think anybody's going 35."

Reavis also said it's unfortunate that so many crashes occur on Wilikina Drive.

"There's a lot of accidents on this road, and I'm really not surprised that this happened."

As of Saturday afternoon, the four vehicles damaged in the crash remained in the parking lot where they were hit. Two of the vehicles had notices on their windshields, asking the drivers to call HPD.

"I just hope that these people recover their cars, and that I'm sorry about the driver," said Reavis.

Investigators said it's unknown yet whether alcohol was involved. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

This is Oahu's 8th traffic fatality so far this year.
