Hundreds of students gathered at Roosevelt High School for the Special Olympics Hawaii's annual Sports Day event on Friday.

The Special Olympics Hawaii organization has been putting on the Sports Day event for nine years and at Roosevelt High School for six years. This year more than 140 Roosevelt High School inclusionary students prepared for several weeks to host the annual Sports Day event that promotes physical activity, community involvement, and peer acceptance.

At the Roosevelt High School stadium, Sports Day participants took to the field to play games such as bocce, soccer, softball and track and field. Julianne Oliphant, a Junior at Roosevelt High School and Co-Leader for Project UNIFY says “Physical Activity is an invigorating thing, it's something that many special education students would not really be included a lot in regular high school things.”

The Sports Day allows students and Special Olympics participants to play games that promote physical activity and community involvement. “For the leaders here, the Roosevelt high school leaders, I believe it's a great opportunity for them to experience being in charge of things. Working together, special education and general education students, they get mutual respect from one another,” said Tracey Bender, Special Olympics Development Manager and Hawaii Project UNIFY Coordinator.
