HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Years of dry conditions on the Big Island gave way to plenty of rain in 2014.

The National Weather Service says rainfall recorded in most gauges around Hawaii Island last year was near average or well above average.

Hydrologist Kevin Kodama says in an announcement that Honokaa and Pahala both finished 2014 with their highest recorded annual totals since 1991.

Kahua Ranch, Kamuela, and Kamuela Upper had their wettest year since 2004.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports a rain gauge at Kawainui Stream at the north end of the island registered 226.06 inches of rain. That's 164 percent of the location's usual annual rainfall.

Some regions of the island had experienced dry conditions since 2008. Several areas were listed as having "exceptional drought" in 2010.
