HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A La Pietra graduate bounced back from a life changing 'leukemia' diagnosis to inspire classmates.

Kash Mawanis was a three sport athlete at La Pietra, sidelined by leukemia her senior year.

After a year-long battle, she beat cancer and is now a pre-med student on scholarship at the University of San Diego.

Mawanis was all smiles as she returned to La Pietra, now a college freshman and cancer survivor. She said, "It's such a miracle for me to be here to tell them how my college experience was when I missed so much of my senior year due to leukemia. All those girls were the people that supported me so I wanted to support them, too, in this way."

Kash says friends had her back. She came back to campus to share lessons learned, and laughs too, like avoiding roommate drama by having a room to herself.

Laughter aside, she is living proof that classmates can handle challenges that come their way.

Kash's health battle inspired her to hold a lemonade fundraiser to beat childhood cancer at her college.

It also led her to a rewarding career path in medicine.

She explained why it was a natural, saying "After going through what I went through I knew I wanted to be a pediatric oncologist because they have inspired me. A profession where a lot of people might pass. For me, I know there's a lot of survival stories and there are more survival stories then sad stories that we always hear."

Her story is giving La Pietra's college bound seniors a valuable life lesson.

Kash wants to work at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children someday.

That's where she fought and won her own battle with cancer.
