HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An attorney in Hilo has a "sky-high" idea that would help Pahoa residents if they get cut off by the lava flow.

Steve Strauss is teaming up with a British airship builder with the goal of bringing a lava ferry system to lower Puna.

The helium-filled balloon would be positioned 400 feet in the air above the lava flow and would be attached to a winch system, similar to a ski gondola.

Strauss says up to 25 passengers at a time could catch a ride from one side of the flow to the other.

Strauss predicts he could have the system built and delivered to the Big Island within six months, as soon as he get approval from the county and state.
