Hawaii state Rep. Carroll steps down as committee chairman

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii state Rep. Mele Carroll has relinquished her chairmanship of the Committee on Human Services in the Hawaii House of Representatives.

Carroll said Wednesday that she asked House Speaker Joseph Souki to reassign the chairmanship because she's having health issues.

Carroll says she's pleased that state Rep. Dee Morikawa will take her place as chairman. She says the change will allow her to focus on her district, her family and her health.

Carroll says it's been a humbling experience to serve as chairman of the committee for the past two years. In her prior role Carroll says she worked on addressing the needs of Hawaii's most vulnerable people on topics like Medicaid, child protective services and foster care.
