Man dies in apparent Big Island drowning

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A 62-year-old Puako man has died in an apparent drowning at a Beach at Hawaii's Big Island.

West Hawaii Today reports that James Barber did not respond to CPR by several bystanders with medical training who responded to the Tuesday incident at Waipio Valley.

Firefighters also were unsuccessful in efforts to revive Barber.

Authorities say witnesses reported that Barber apparently was overwhelmed by strong currents.

Fire Capt. Christian Wong says a surfer saw Barber go under water and pulled him to the surface about 50 feet from shore.

An autopsy is planned.
