HONOLULU (AP) - The Coast Guard says it has suspended a search for a missing boater off Hawaii's Big Island.

The Coast Guard says it searched an area covering nearly 700 miles to look for the missing crewmember of the 74-foot sailing vessel, Hawaii Aloha.

The Coast Guard says watchstanders were notified by the Hawaii County Fire Department of a flare sighting Saturday.

The flares were determined to have been fired by the crew of the Hawaii Aloha. The crew abandoned ship into a life raft, and four of the five boaters were rescued from the raft.

The sailboat subsequently went aground. One person on board the vessel went missing.
