Medical marijuana group offers recommendations

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The chairwoman of the Hawaii House Health Committee says a task force on medical marijuana will recommend that the state have production centers and dispensaries as soon as 2017.

Rep. Della Au Belatti tells West Hawaii Today that she's working on a bill for the House to consider when the Legislature convenes Jan. 21.

Belatti has been overseeing the Medical Marijuana Dispensary Task Force. She says it finished its work Tuesday.

Among the recommendations is that the Department of Health base dispensary licenses on a guideline of 1 for every 500 patients starting Jan. 1, 2017, with dispensaries beginning operations on July 1, 2017.

Hawaii's law allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana for certain conditions was signed in 2000.
