Mariota mania on New Year's Day

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

 "I couldn't wait for this. I was here at 10 o'clock".

Charlene Lorenzo was speaking for herself, but she could have been doing so for the bar full of patrons who were in place at Giovanni Pastrami to watch Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks take on Florida State in the first ever FBS semifinal.

Lorenzo's son went to St. Louis School with Marcus. Other fans had their own connection to Hawaii's first ever Heisman winner.

Mike Wang, adorned in a #8 Oregon jersey, traveled to Waikiki for the holidays from Eugene, Oregon, where the University of Oregon is located.

"It's surreal, to be here on Oahu, and watching him for 3 years, it was awesome" said Wang.

There was a mix of anticipation, nerves and confidence there. Wang was unafraid to make a prediction.

"Ducks are going to win by 20".

Across town at Murphy's Bar and Grill, a decidedly pro-Oregon crowd cheered on the ducks.

"It's ohana, we all stick together, right? We all root for each other" said Jennifer Whitener. She was with an FSU fan, Jim Cosper, who despite being in the minority, managed to keep the proper perspective.

"We're in Hawaii, watching football. I'm in shorts and a tee shirt. It doesn't get much better than this".
