BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island summits above 11,500 feet are experiencing severe weather on Wednesday, bringing strong winds, snow and freezing rain to the area. The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a winter weather advisory that's in effect until 8 a.m. A High Wind Warning is also in effect until 6 p.m.

Forecasters said up to 2 inches of snow and ice are expected, with westward winds at 50 to 75 mph and localized gusts over 90 mph. Temperatures will be near 30 degrees.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, so NWS advises the public to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.
