HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A fast-moving cold front will bring gusty winds and briefly heavy rain as it sweeps through the islands late Tuesday and Wednesday. The front should clear most of the island chain in time for New Year's Eve.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for southwest Kona winds to steadily increase Tuesday to 15 to 25 miles per hour. Some areas downslope of the strong southwest winds may experience higher gusts.

Some pockets of heavy showers have already begun to form ahead of the front for the smaller islands and will continue to develop as the day progresses.

The front itself should reach Kauai by midday Tuesday, Oahu and Molokai in the afternoon, and then pass through the remainder of the island chain overnight.

Cool north winds and drier conditions will follow the front and remain Wednesday into the New Year. It won't last that long, however, as another round of active weather and possible thunderstorms as soon as late Thursday into the weekend.
