Christmas crooks rob nursery in Kaneohe

KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A pair of thieves didn't take the holiday off.  We've learned they robbed a small business in Kaneohe of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and tools.

The Hui Ku Maoli Ola Nursery in Kaneohe is surrounded by beauty, but on Christmas of all times ugliness broke through.

Christmas night not a creature was stirring except for two crooks.  The first guy scopes out the property, then finds his way to the expensive equipment that was in an enclosed shed.

In five trips the one thief took chain saws, a Hilti drilling mud gun, and other tools.  He drops it off at the locked gate where the other thief takes it and loads it in their car.

"It's a bummer that we enjoyed two days of great Christmas. Christmas Eve with family. Christmas with family and come home to this and it makes you think why aren't those guys with family? They should have been with their family instead of robbing cool people," said Rick Barboza, Hui Ku Maoli Ola Nursery owner.

He does have a big English mastiff as a guard dog.

"Yeah we have a great guard dog lucky for them she was probably she was probably full off of Christmas dinner and didn't make it out here in time, but you can see in the video they were spooked by something. I'm pretty sure it was her," said Barboza.

From 10:00 to 10:15 pm the thieves take their haul and drive away in an older model car.  Just eight minutes later at 10:23 Barboza and his family come home.

"That's the most frustrating part of it all. If I just didn't do one thing at my sister's house I would have been back at the perfect time but lucky for those guys, or lucky for myself who knows," said Barboza.

The nursery only sells plants native to Hawaii trying to be good stewards of the land.

"If they knew what we did as a business maybe they wouldn't rip us off. Or maybe they're just that kind of people that they don't care. And if you're doing it on Christmas yeah they don't care," said Barboza.

He called police who filed a report and dusted for fingerprints. If you have even a seed of information call police right away.
