HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaiian Airlines hit a milestone today.

Waiting to depart for his flight to Kahului, Harrison Matthews was surprised when his gate transformed into a celebration. With Hula dancers and ukulele players suddenly performing, Mathews, a Maui resident, was pulled aside by Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley.

Matthews hadn't broken any new TSA rule, but he was picked out of his gate as Hawaiian Airlines 10 millionth passenger in 2014.

Hawaiian Airlines has been slowly soaring toward the 10 million mark; in 2012 they flew 9,484,204 passengers. A year later in 2013 they increased their boarding to 9,935,734.

Although congratulations are in order for Hawaiian Airlines, it was Matthews who was on the receiving end of a big prize.

Due to his lucky booking, Matthews received 250,000 HawaiianMiles; the rest of his Flight 386 passengers didn't leave empty handed either, his fellow flyers waiting to board all received 1,000 HawaiianMiles of their own.

10 million isn't the only important number for Hawaiian Airlines. In November, the airline celebrated its 85th birthday and in October they were number 1 in the nation for on-time flight performance.

This isn't the first 10 million ceremony for Hawaiian Airlines. After their first 38 years of service, Hawaiian Airlines celebrated it's 10 millionth flyer in 1967, a feat now accomplished in less than a year's time.
