Hawaiian Homes Commission approves leasing changes

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaiian Homes Commission has approved changes for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands' month-to-month land leasing program.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that commission Tuesday authorized its staff to develop a permit system based on competitive bids rather than a first-come, first-serve system.

The department also will get rid of annual automatic renewals for revocable permits, establish procedures for determining fair market rent and conduct compliance reviews.

The revocable-permit program was criticized for giving some tenants discounted, long-term rentals for what were designed to be short-term deals.

An advisory appointed by former Gov. Neil Abercrombie recommend changes.

The department will hold public meetings to collect feedback on a revised system..
