HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A judge has ruled Joseph Kahawai, the 46-year-old man accused of killing a woman and dumping her body in Waikiki last year, is fit to stand trial.

Kahawai, who has an extensive criminal record, is believed to have met the victim, 51-year-old Janine Meyer, at a homeless shelter last October. Meyer was a resident of the shelter.

On October 28th, Meyer's body was found in the dumpster behind the Hawaiian Colony Condos in Waikiki. The Honolulu Medical Examiner said she died of asphyxiation.

Police sources said at the time that a witness had reported seeing Kahawai drag an object to the dumpster. Hawaii News Now later learned that surveillance video showed a man who resembled Kahawai climbing into the dumpster and putting trash on what police say was Meyer's body.

Kahawai was indicted in connection with the crime nearly two weeks later.
