Tourist rescued from waters off Kauai Tourist rescued from waters off Kauai

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Lifeguards have rescued a 27-year-old Maryland tourist from ocean waters off Kauai during a high surf advisory.

Firefighters arrived at Queen's Bath on Kauai's North Shore Friday afternoon to help a swimmer in distress. Two rescuers jumped into the water with a rescue tube, but the victim had a hard time holding on.

Lifeguards arrived on a Jet Ski and brought him safely to shore. He sustained abrasions and showed signs of exhaustion.

He was treated on shore by medics and brought to Wilcox Hospital for treatment, escaping with non-life threatening injuries.

The National Weather Service warns that giant breaking surf and dangerous currents make it extremely hazardous to approach the shoreline.

Fire Chief Robert Westerman says they were fortunate to avoid tragedy Friday but that's not always the case.
