HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Since Hawaii became a state, residents have grocery shopped at the Foodland Super Market located in Ala Moana.

On a day supposed to be marked as good luck and new beginnings, December 13, 2014, (12/13/14), Foodland Ala Moana shut it's doors for the final time.

In November, Foodland Chairman and CEO Jenai S. Wall sited the location's economic feasibility as the main reason for the shut down.

"...while it truly saddens us to say 'goodbye' to Ala Moana, the challenges and costs of operating a store in this location today made it impossible for us to justify staying." Wall said.

Over 2500 employees work for Foodland Super Market Ltd. The 66 employees who worked at the Ala Moana Foodland will be offered positions at the other 33 locations around the islands.

Ala Moana Center is still currently undergoing a $573 million redevelopment project which is slated to finish up in 2015. The expanded Ewa Wing is reported to eventually cover 340,000 square feet and add four additional floors for parking.

Foodland's rich history with Ala Moana dates all the way back to the mall's opening in 1959. The Foodland Super Market Ltd.'s 11th store was originally located where the current food court stands. In 1986 Foodland moved to its current location where it has undergone two renovations in its tenure, one in 1995 and the second in 2007.
