Notable figures comment on Mariota winning the Heisman

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Marcus Mariota is the 2014 Heisman trophy winner and Hawaii couldn't be prouder.

Not even hours after the monumental announcement, notable local and national figures congratulated the St. Louis alum on his crowning achievement.

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz recalls his first meeting with Mariota and seeing more than just a good football player.

"Congratulations to Marcus Mariota on receiving the Heisman Trophy. We are all justly proud that he is the first Heisman Trophy recipient from Hawai'i," Senator Schatz said. "I had the privilege of meeting Marcus last summer, and he exemplifies the best that Hawai'i has to offer. I congratulate him on his accomplishments on and off the field, and we all look forward to seeing him continue his successful football career in the upcoming College Football Playoff."

From her official Twitter account, U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono expressed her gratitude for Oahu's son. 

"Congratulations to Hawaii's Marcus Mariota on winning the Heisman Trophy. the 50th State is proud of your accomplishments on & off the field."

On his official Facebook account, Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi showed his state pride congratulating the outer island athlete on his victory.

"Congratulations to Hawaii's first Heisman Trophy Winner, QB Marcus Mariota, from St Louis High School, and the University of Oregon! I have been so impressed with his humility and respect and Aloha! His parents have raised an outstanding young man! I am so proud to be a local boy and from Hawaii! Mahalo Marcus! You have lifted all of us and displayed the best of who we are!" Kenoi said.

Mayor Caldwell made it known he is proud to run the city which Marcus Mariota calls home.

"Marcus Mariota is a son of O'ahu who makes us incredibly proud. He's a role model for those who play sports and those who don't; an inspiration to those both young and old. His grace under pressure, relaxed demeanor, talent and work ethic motivate us all. This year, the best player in college football is an honored member of Hawaii's Samoan community, a superstar Saint Louis Crusader, and the pride of all O'ahu residents. On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, congratulations to Hawai'i's first Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota."

Now that he can officially be called a Heisman Trophy winner, Mariota, as well as the whole Aloha State can look towards another moniker...National Champion.
