Wind Advisory issued for gusty trade winds

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory across the state until 6 p.m. Sunday.

High pressure building north of the islands will drive strong and gusty trade winds across many areas of the islands.

Some parts of the state will have northeast winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour with localized gusts near 50 miles per hour.

Forecasters said strongest winds will be on the lee side of mountains.

  • On Kauai, the strongest winds will be on the leeward sides of the mountains from Koloa to Barking Sands.
  • On Oahu, the strongest winds will impact areas immediately leeward of the Koolau and Waianae ranges, and eastern locations from Waimanalo to Makapuu.
  • In Maui County, the strongest winds will be leeward of mountain areas, across much of Lanai, and through Central Maui from Wailuku to Maalaea Harbor.
  • On Hawaii island, the strong winds will be focused in the leeward Kohala area, the Waimea to Kawaihae Corridor, near South Point and near Upolu Point.

Winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for higher-profile vehicles.
