NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Heisman Award press conference Friday was missing something. Marcus Mariota.

Mariota, who Thursday night took home the Maxwell, O'Brien and Walter Camp awards, made a pit stop in Baltimore to accept the Unitas Golden Arm award Friday.

He is due in to New York City Saturday morning.

Despite his absence, fellow finalists Amari Cooper and Melvin Gordon did their best to carry the load. Gordon, Wisconsin's standout running back, was only a few minutes into his press availability when the questioning turned towards his thoughts on Marcus.

“The media just loves him so no one really gets a chance to talk to him. I've spoken to him once or twice, seems like a real cool dude. Doesn't seem like he talks too much, but that's the same with Coop” he said, referencing the soft spoken, big-playmaking wide receiver from Alabama, Amari Cooper.

Said Cooper of his interactions of Marcus:

“I only got a chance to talk to him once, but I could tell he was a really nice person”.

Later in the evening, those who know Marcus better gathered in midtown Manhattan ahead of his arrival. A contingent from St. Louis School, Mariota's alma mater, hosted a reception at the Lexington Brass restaurant.

Greg Frey, President, St Louis Alumni Association, summed it up:

“So I think what you see tonight is a celebration of a young man, whether he is here or not, available to us or not, a celebration of his hard work, and what it means to an entire state”.

Saturday, the entire state will be hoping to celebrate Marcus winning the Heisman.
