Schatz named to Senate appropriations committee

Sen. Brian Schatz Sen. Brian Schatz

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii's U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz has been named to serve on the powerful Senate Committee on Appropriations.

The panel writes legislation and decides funding levels for government departments, agencies and organizations.

Schatz announced the appointment Friday. He says it's an important job because he'll be in a position to ensure that Hawaii's needs are strongly represented.

Retired Admiral Thomas Fargo says the appointment so early in Schatz' career indicates that he's earned the respect of his Senate colleagues.

Schatz will retain his seats on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

Schatz was also tapped to serve on the Senate Select Committee on Ethics, which investigates allegations of impropriety.

The appointments are subject to a full vote by the Senate.
