Suspicious fire damages Hilo community gym

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A fire caused an estimated $65,000 damage to a community gymnasium in Hilo and police say the cause is suspicious.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports a motorist at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday spotted the fire in the Stanley Costales Gym at Waiakea Uka Park.

Police Lt. Gregory Esteban says the fire extended from the floor to the ceiling in the northwest corner and damaged about 30 percent of the roof.

Esteban says there was no apparent source of ignition.

A $1 million upgrade in 2012 at the gym renovated bathrooms, replaced the roof and put in new bleachers.

County Parks and Recreation spokesman Jason Armstrong says youth athletic programs will be relocated until repairs care made. He says the popular facility was to be well-used for upcoming tournaments.
