High Surf Warning extended for north, west shores

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A High Surf Warning has been posted for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai and for north facing shores of Maui.

Forecasters say a elevated Northwest swell will will peak Wednesday followed by a slow decline on Thursday and Friday.

The warning is now in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday. 

  • Surf: along north and west facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui, 20 to 30 feet tonight and 20 to 25 feet Thursday. Along West facing shores of Oahu and Molokai, 15 to 20 feet tonight and 12 to 18 feet Thursday.

  • Timing: Warning level surf through Thursday.
  • Impacts: High, expect Ocean Water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong Longshore and Rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.

Ocean Safety officials ask that the public avoids swimming at all North Shore beaches due to dangerous conditions.
