KPD’s Traffic Safety Section honored at Police Commission meeting
LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Deputy Police Chief Michael Contrades and the Kaua'i Police Commission presented certificates of recognition to all members of KPD's Traffic Safety Section at last week's Police Commission meeting held at the Pi'ikoi Building.
Lt. Jon Takamura, Sgt. Jason Overmyer, and Officers Arthur Caberto, Shawn Hanna, Joseph Himongala and Isaiah Sarsona, were honored for their investigation of a traffic crash that resulted in a pedestrian fatality.
On the morning of October 7, a female pedestrian was crossing Rice Street fronting the Lihu‘e Post Office, when she was struck by a pickup truck. The driver immediately stopped his truck in an attempt to render aid to the woman, when a second vehicle then struck the woman and continued on without stopping.
After taking witness statements, the officers set out to conduct traffic surveys in the area, in an attempt to locate vehicles matching the description of the vehicle that fled the scene. Police then conducted follow-up interviews, and within three days of the fatal crash, located and arrested the second driver involved.
“The professionalism, extensive training, and dedication shown during this investigation is worthy of commendation,” stated Assistant Chief of the Investigative Services Bureau Ale Quibilan. “Through their efforts, this team was able to bring closure to the victim's loved ones and our entire community.”
