ESTERO, Fla. – The University of Hawai‘i men's basketball team saw a 21-point lead dwindle to one but had enough to pull away in a 62-55 win over Marist on Tuesday morning in the Gulf Coast Showcase at Germain Arena. The ‘Bows (5-2) will play East Carolina on Wednesday in the fifth-place game.
Garrett Nevels had a team-high 18 points with Aaron Valdes posting a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Mike Thomas scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Negus Webster-Chan added nine points.
Chavaughn Lewis dropped a game-high 24 points for Marist while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
Marist (0-4) closed the first half on a 9-0 run to shave UH's lead to 12 points, then built on that momentum in the second half. Nevels and Valdes both scored in the paint to bring the lead back up to 15 points. The ‘Bows then went cold from the floor, going almost seven minutes without hitting a field goal as Marist went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 46-45 with just over 10 minutes to play.
The ‘Bows regrouped and went on a run of their own as Webster-Chan scored on a layup then hit a three-pointer to give his team an 11-point lead with 5:38 remaining. Marist cut the lead to three points on a pair of free throws from Phillip Lawrence (11 pts, 4 reb), but the ‘Bows held on for the win.
