Waikiki Elementary School teacher named Hawaii's State Teacher of the Year

Waikiki Elementary School teacher Catherine Caine was named 2015 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year during Hawaii Department of Education ceremonies held 3 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Hawaii State Capitol auditorium.

While in kindergarten, Catherine said her favorite game was to play teacher to a roomful of family members. When she reached college, Catherine's studies in clinical psychology sparked an interested in education that has fueled her 34-year career.

This National Board Certified teacher connects lessons to real-life issues to engage students to take action and make a difference. Students have collected pennies for leukemia to learn math, and they wrote a letter to the principal with suggestions about playground equipment to sharpen their persuasive writing skills.

Catherine's drive to advance the profession has led her to various leadership roles, including as a mentor for the University of Hawaii teacher development program. She has also shared her expertise locally and abroad, including at international conferences in Japan, Singapore and Spain.

She received (use for a year) of a 2014 Honda CRV provided by Morrie Stoebner, owner of Honda Windward. The presentation was made by Honda Windward's Bob Belbas.

The Polynesian Cultural Center, the State program's corporate sponsor for 29 consecutive years presented $500 cash awards to each District Teacher of the Year and an additional $1,000 cash award to the State Teacher of the Year.

SMART Technologies presented each of the 2015 Hawaii State Finalists a SMART software package consisting of a SMART Notebook Classroom License with a one-year software maintenance package and one-year subscription their newest software—SMART amp. The 2015 Hawaii Teacher of the Year wins Technology Classroom package consisting of both hardware and software products.
