Local Connection: Great American Smokeout

By: Rick Blangiardi

This Thursday is the Great American Smokeout - and Hawaii News Now has partnered with the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline to encourage smokers to use this day to start to quit smoking for good. In 2013, Hawaii ranked third lowest in the country for adult smoking, and that's due in part to the great work of the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline. Since 2005, the Quitline has helped over 60,000 people in Hawaii.

The Quitline's services are 100% free to all adult tobacco users and can include free coaching and free nicotine patches or gum. When you join one of the free Quitline programs, you'll create an easy-to-follow Quitting Plan that will show you how to quit - and stay quit.

So if you smoke, when you're ready to quit we urge you call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or sign up for their web program at www.HawaiiQuitline.org.The Quitline is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and is completely free and confidential.

If you don't smoke - but someone you care about does, let them know about the free services of the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

While great progress has been made, about 1400 people in Hawaii still die every year from tobacco use. Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health, and with free help available, there's no better time to quit.
