Deadline approaching for public fishing day at Nu'uanu Reservoir

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Prospective anglers have one week to apply for the opportunity to participate in a public fishing day at Nu‘uanu Reservoir No. 4 on Saturday, December 13, 2014.

In preparation for an improvement project that will increase flood control capacity and improve the drainage system that releases water from the reservoir, the Board of Water Supply (BWS) is offering this exclusive opportunity for the community to fish at its Nu‘uanu Reservoir No. 4. To minimize overcrowding at the reservoir, fishing will be limited to 120 people. Interested participants must obtain a valid State of Hawaii freshwater game fishing license and an entry card.

Applications for the entry cards for fishing in Nu‘uanu Reservoir No. 4 are available until Monday, November 24, 2014. Applications for entry cards can be picked up at the BWS Land Division Office at 630 South Beretania Street, Engineering Building, Room 204. Blank applications will not be mailed out.

The deadline for submitting applications to BWS is 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28, 2014. Entry cards may be dropped off at BWS or mailed. If returning by mail, enclose the entry card(s) in an envelope addressed to BWS, 630 South Beretania Street, Honolulu, HI 96843, Attention: Land Division.

There will be two (2) fishing periods; 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Sixty (60) anglers will be assigned to each fishing period. A random drawing will be used to assign each angler a fishing time. Processed entry cards sent back to applicants will indicate the time that anglers may enter the reservoir. Entry will be strictly limited to those who have appropriate entry cards and valid Hawaii freshwater game fishing license(s). Anglers age 8 or younger are not required to be licensed, but must be accompanied by a licensed or unlicensed supervising adult. Anglers must participate during the period they are assigned to. There will be no make-up periods or refunds.

Freshwater game fishing licenses may be purchased as follows:

  • All minors (age 9 through 15, inclusive): $ 3.00
  • Resident (includes armed forces): $ 5.00
  • Non-resident: $25.00
  • Senior citizen (age 65 or older): No charge

Hawaii freshwater game fishing licenses may be acquired online from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources website here. Follow the instructions and complete the registration process. Your license will be issued once you successfully complete this process. The website also provides a list of locations where licenses may be purchased.

The bag limit is two (2) channel catfish per licensed angler. Any channel catfish 16 inches long or larger must be kept by the angler and be counted towards the bag limit. Channel catfish caught by unlicensed anglers age 8 or younger will be included in the bag limit for the licensed, supervising adult. Cardholders age 8 or younger may purchase a license to obtain their own bag limit.

Warm clothing, covered shoes and rain gear are strongly recommended while fishing at Nu‘uanu Reservoir No. 4.
