No tsunami expected after 6.7 quake near New Zealand

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake near New Zealand was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake struck at 12:40 p.m. HST off the coast of the North Island. 

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement:

"Based on all available data, a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii."
