No tsunami expected after 7.3 quake near Indonesia

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A magnitude 7.3 earthquake has occurred near Indonesia and the Philippines, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was at a depth of 29.2 miles.

Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.

The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports, "Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
