Local Connection: Gib Arnold fired

By: Rick Blangiardi

The sudden termination of UH basketball coach Gib Arnold has once again cast the UH athletics department into turmoil.

Arnold and his assistant Brandyn Akana were dismissed a week before the season begins and though there are plenty of reasons to believe that this was in response to upcoming NCAA sanctions, Arnold said the firing was without cause.

Arnold alleged that UH fired him based on allegations that were not revealed to him nor was he allowed to refute. nevertheless, Arnold and Akana will still be paid what is left on their contracts.

So, UH once again has paid out another contract for … who knows what?

We have seen this in the case of other UH presidents and chancellors and the bill keeps going up.

Assuming UH had some reason to relieve Arnold and Akana of their duties, which is more than likely the case, why not wait until sanctions were handed out?

In this case, the lack of communication was troubling. The UH athletics department put out a short news release and let it go at that.

If Arnold was allowed to make a statement saying nothing had been proved, why wouldn't athletic director Ben Jay be available to generally assert the university's position.

At the very least, Jay should have been able to talk about what happens next with the UH basketball program.

Instead, Ben Jay went off to have ankle surgery and we are all left to speculate about what happens next.

Not good form and not what is expected when the players have just been let down and a program is in crisis.
