'Keep Hawaii's Heroes' campaign hopes to keep military members in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A new campaign was launched Sunday in response to a military downsizing effort that will potentially force about 20,000 soldiers and civilians off the islands.

The 2020 Force Structure Realignment plan will eliminate soldiers from the two biggest military bases in Hawaii: Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter.

According to organizers of the 'Keep Hawaii's Heroes' campaign, the plan will also affect nearly 30,000 military family members. The downsizing is estimated to cause a loss of nearly $1.3 billion to Hawaii's economy.
