HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A powerful storm off Kamchatka Peninsula a few days ago created a very large northwest swell, rising to warning levels that persisted through Wednesday.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect for the north and west shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu and Molokai and north-facing shores on Maui. The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service office in Honolulu said waves along north-facing shores may reach 14 to 18 feet. Waves along west-facing shores may reach 8 to 12 feet.
Large breaking surf, a significant shore break and dangerous current will make entering the water very hazardous, said forecasters. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death. Boaters should be aware of an increased number of surfers and body boarders using harbor channels to get to surfing areas.
On Tuesday, there were 10 rescues on the west shore and six on the north shore.
