HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Hawaii County's civil defense director says a letter from the state Department of Agriculture about channeling lava down a Puna road contains incorrect information.
Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira says there are no plans to divert the flow that's threatening communities in the Puna district.
Those who lease agricultural lots in Pahoa received letters last month warning about an effort to channel the flow down Kahakai Boulevard to control the lava's direction. The Pahoa Agricultural Park lease holders were told a significant portion of the road would be impassable.
Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the department says the letter was a result of miscommunication and a corrected version would be drafted Friday.
Farmer Ken Kudo says the letter made him worried that the county is secretly planning to divert the lava.
