University reports multiple moped thefts

HONOLULU (AP) - An official with the University of Hawaii public safety department says security patrols will be stepped up after reports of a mini-crime wave, or at least a wave of crimes involving mini-vehicles.

Sarah Rice tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that four mopeds and a maintenance golf cart were stolen in the last week at the Manoa campus. She says that's a huge number for such a short period.

Rice says some of the stolen mopeds were not chained to stationary objects. Security officials have handing out fliers warning of thefts and encouraging people to chain up the small motorized bikes.

So far 29 vehicle thefts have been reported at the university's flagship campus. There were 49 in 2013.

The stolen golf cart was recovered.
