A magnitude 6.9 earthquake near Papua New Guinea was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The quake which struck at 5:43 p.m. HST was at a depth of 40 miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement:
"Based on all available data, a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii."
