Maui County vows to carry out new GMO law

HONOLULU (AP) - Maui County spokesman Rod Antone says the county is finalizing how much manpower and equipment will be needed to implement a new law temporarily banning the cultivation of genetically engineered crops.

Antone says Mayor Alan Arakawa's administration will need to get approval for a budget amendment once it finalizes the resources needed.

County Managing Director Keith Regan says the county is obligated to carry out the will of the people. He wants to assure people the county is taking the initiative seriously.

Maui voters on Tuesday narrowly passed a ballot initiative establishing the new law. It requires companies producing genetically modified organisms to pay for studies on the safety of their operations.

Monsanto Co. says it will ask the court to declare the initiative legally flawed.
