Community Care Connection: Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP) is dedicated to the recovery of Maui's native forest birds and restoring their habitats.

MFBRP's efforts are primarily focused on the recovery of the Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill;Psuedonestor xanthophrys), which is the most endangered forest bird on Maui. As a research and management organization, MFBRP studies Kiwikiu demographics throughout its current range in order to design and implement management strategies to prevent their extinction.

One of the organization's immediate goals is wide-scale native forest restoration on leeward east Maui. Once restored, it will reintroduce Kiwikiu to this area, which is where they were once found. MFBRP strives to educate the public about the native forest birds of Maui, the issues they face, and what our project is doing to help in this race to save them.

Jennifer Robbins spoke with Hanna Mounce of MFBRP to find out more.
