HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It's Monday and even though it's not our favorite day of the week, Steve still wants to help you save money in this edition of Smart Money Monday. We've passed Halloween and now everyone is looking forward to Thanksgiving, but with Turkey Day looming so do the costs of preparing an expensive family meal.
Steve talks to Bank of Hawaii In-Store Branch Manager, Brandon Sassone at Safeway Kapahulu to find out the best ways to save money around the holidays. Sassone recommends setting aside a budget strictly for the dinner, that way you don't get caught in the store ringing up a cart full of items without knowing how much you can truly spend.
Another tip Sassone recommends to shoppers, offer a potluck style Thanksgiving if you plan on having lots of extended family visit. Try a BYOS, bring your own side, style dinner. You can focus on the bird while aunty and uncle can bring the stuffing and mashed potatoes.
Also, be on the lookout for coupons Sassone says. Grocery stores are often very generous around Thanksgiving and run in-store holiday promotions. And finally, don't stray from your list; you run the risk of buying unnecessary items that could spike the final price on your receipt.
