A lengthy police investigation after shots were fired in a Kailua neighborhood ended after more than four hours. The trouble started just before 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Residents told Hawaii News Now that a man behind the wheel of a speeding car lost control and crashed into a wall outside of a home.
"You could hear the screeching of the wheels and then a loud bang so everybody in the neighborhood kind of ran out to go over and look and see what happened," said Kailua resident Rocky Owens. "An individual got out of the car and walked down the street and into a house. He apparently lives right around the corner and then the people that live behind him said they heard two gunshots."
Heavily-armed officers from the Specialized Services Division spread out near Kaipiha Street. Police also set up a command center at Kalaheo Community Park.
"Once the police arrived they kind of evacuated a lot of the homes that were nearby and then the SWAT team guys came," said Owens.
The incident ended shortly before 8:30 in the evening. Police said that a 33-year-old man died of a self-inflicted wound. The case is now classified as an unattended death.
